GROUP TRAINING CAN GET BETTER RESULTS THAN TRAINING CAN GET BETTER RESULTS THAN TRAINING SOLO?

Updated: May 4, 2021

People register for a fitness program for many different reasons. Whether it be to maximize results for an upcoming event, to lose excess fat, to gain lean muscle mass or to just improve one’s overall health; whoever the person is in question, every reason has merit.

So what are your options in terms of training and fitness?

Can training in a group get better results?

Of course this is highly individual but there are definite advantages to training in a group. Here are 3 reasons why group training could get you better results:

1. According to a study cited in ACE fitness, working out with a partner or in a group setting can boost productivity and workout intensity for other participants by as much as 200%! This phenomenon is influenced by the Kohler effect, which occurs when an individual exercises harder because they perceive others around them as performing better or being more fit; in essence, it incentivizes competition and results (ACE, 2020).

2. Humans are social beings and we rely on each other to motivate and inspire. If you have a group of friends that you do an activity with and you enjoy their company, then it is certain that you will benefit in terms of exercise adherence. There’s nothing like a bit of peer encouragement!

3. You get feedback from a trained instructor. Having a fitness professional there to help you and guide you will get you better results long term. They will help you to avoid injury and focus on aspects of your fitness that you may not have been aware of.

Of course, the current covid-19 pandemic has tossed a curve ball into the fitness plans of many group fitness enthusiasts as temporary shutdowns and social distancing measures continue to prevail. All, however is not lost!
